British jobs and Foreign Projects
Thanks to Thatcher’s open arm policy toward FDI, Japan joined the US in choosing to make Britain their production base for the European and Commonwealth market. Year on year between 1985 and 2002 foreign investment projects created a total of over 620,000 new jobs and provided security for another 800,000 (source: Invest UK). As we moved into the 2000’s this trend has continued
In the DIT’s (the Department of Internal Trade) publication, investment results for the tax year year 2015 to2016 it was reported that new jobs created by FDI hit an annual high of almost 85000.
This high dropped to 83000 new jobs plus secured jobs (around an additional 30,000) in the UK for 2016, the bulk to come from US investment projects.
